NIOS Block I Closed on 30 September 2026: Block II Is Now Open for the Oct 2027 Exam
Block I closed on 30 September 2026 and the portal has moved to Block II. Here is what that changes for your first examination, and what the Block II window actually gives you.
Where things stand on 1 October 2026
NIOS Stream 1 Block I for session 2026-27 closed on 30 September 2026. Block II is now the open window: checked on 1 October 2026, the official portal sdmis.nios.ac.in lists the Stream 1 session as “Stream 1 (OCT. 2027)”. Under the prospectus, Block II runs to 31 January 2027 at normal fee and leads to a first public examination in September–October 2027. NIOSPATH is a private guidance service and is not the official NIOS website.
What actually changes if you miss it
- Admission by 30 September 2026 (Block I): your first public examination is March–April 2027.
- Admission in Block II: your first public examination is September–October 2027.
- That is about a six-month wait before your first chance to sit the exam, and the certificate follows the exam.
Both blocks lead to the same NIOS Secondary or Senior Secondary certificate, the same five-year validity and the same nine examination chances. Only the examination cycle differs.
Block II dates (official prospectus 2026-27)
- Normal window: 16 September 2026 to 31 January 2027
- With ₹260 late fee: 1–15 February 2027
- With ₹520 late fee: 16–28 February 2027
- With ₹910 late fee: 1–15 March 2027
- First public examination: September–October 2027
Confirmed: checked on 1 October 2026, the SDMIS portal shows the Block II option as “Stream 1 (OCT. 2027)”. Check the portal yourself before you plan around it, and remember NIOS can change a window by notification, as it did on 15 September 2026.
What NIOS charges either way
- Secondary, five subjects: ₹2,340 general male · ₹1,890 female and third gender · ₹1,560 SC/ST/Ex-servicemen/PwD
- Senior Secondary, five subjects: ₹2,600 · ₹2,150 · ₹1,690
- Each additional subject: ₹940 · online application cost: ₹70
Amounts are from the official SDMIS fee structure. A late fee applies on top inside a late window. Work out your own total with the NIOS fee estimator, and pay only on the official portal.
Who should not wait for Block II
- Anyone who needs the certificate for a college, job or age-linked application in 2027.
- Anyone already prepared for the subjects, because Block I gives the earlier examination.
- Transfer of Credit cases, where the failed-board marksheet has to reach the Regional Centre within 10 days of admission.
Who can reasonably wait
- Learners who are still short of the age requirement. Block I age is counted as on 31 July and Block II as on 31 January, so a birthday in between can decide the window — see the NIOS age limit and date-of-birth rules.
- Learners still collecting documents. Check the document list first; an incomplete file is the usual reason an admission stalls.
Applying in Block II
The form takes about 30 minutes once your scans are ready. Follow the step-by-step guide to fill the NIOS admission form online, and see the record of the Block I extension notice for what the closed window required. Once you have submitted, you can check your NIOS admission status.
