Before you start: keep these scanned

• Recent passport-size colour photograph
• Your signature (preferably in black ink)
• Valid identity proof — Aadhaar number, Aadhaar enrolment number, passport, ration card, bank account number or another government ID
• Date of birth proof (Class 10): birth certificate, passport, transfer/school-leaving certificate, or Aadhaar with full date of birth
• Residence proof (see our documents checklist)
• Class 8 marksheet or self-certificate (Class 10) / Class 10 marksheet (Class 12)
• Category, ex-serviceman or disability certificate, if applicable
• Failed marksheet from your previous board, for Streams 2, 3 and 4
• A working mobile number and email ID

Steps

1. Go to sdmis.nios.ac.in and read the instructions.
2. Pick one stream — the four streams are mutually exclusive. Click Register, read the declaration, click Proceed.
3. Select your State/UT.
4. Choose an identity type and type its number; upload the scanned original.
5. Select the course (Secondary or Senior Secondary).
6. If using Aadhaar: your name and gender must match the Aadhaar card exactly, or authentication fails and you can’t continue.
7. Complete the form sections: Basic details → Optional details → Subjects → Study centre → Documents.
8. Pay online and keep the receipt.
9. Track verification and download your ID card after confirmation — see admission status.

Mistakes to avoid

• Wrong date of birth — it cannot be changed later except for genuine typing errors.
• Subject combinations that break group rules — see Class 12 groups.
• Missing documents — the form is rejected and the fee is not refunded.
• Choosing TOC after registration costs more: ask for it in the form.
