Date-of-birth proof: what the official FAQ accepts
The SDMIS FAQ states that a birth certificate issued by a Municipal Corporation, a Municipal Body, a Village Panchayat or any other body authorised by the Registrar, Birth and Death, Government of India, and the Aadhaar card issued by a government agency are valid proof of date of birth. Check the current prospectus for any additional options that apply to your case.
Date-of-birth proof accepted (prospectus 2026-27)
- Class 10: birth certificate from the municipal authority or Registrar of Births and Deaths (for those born on or after 26.01.1989), or passport issued by the Government of India, or original transfer/school-leaving certificate (Principal-signed; private schools need countersignature by the State/District education officer), or Aadhaar card.
- Class 12: only your Class 10 certificate showing date of birth.
- If you upload both Aadhaar and a school-leaving certificate, the school-leaving certificate is taken as age proof.
- Orphan/juvenile/street children: a medical legal certificate with a First Class Magistrate affidavit, or Aadhaar.
Proof of residence accepted
- Ration card or Aadhaar card
- Employer appointment letter on letterhead
- Water, telephone or electricity bill
- Running bank account statement
- Income tax assessment order
- Voter ID card
- Parents’ passport (for minors)
- Renting? Permanent address proof plus a valid rent agreement
- Homeless/destitute/migrant learners: a self-certificate countersigned by a sponsoring guardian or NGO and attested by a government official
Foreign-board Class 10 holders joining Class 12 also need an Embassy and UGC equivalence certificate.
Pre-submission consistency checklist
- 1Name spelling is identical on the form, DOB proof, previous marksheet and ID.
- 2Date of birth matches exactly (day, month, year order) across every document.
- 3Father’s and mother’s names match your previous-school records.
- 4Every scan is complete, upright and readable — no cropped seals, signatures or dates.
- 5The photograph is recent and clear, and the signature is your own.
- 6Category or concession certificates are in the applicant’s name and still valid.
- 7The email and mobile number are ones you control — NIOS sends confirmation and the enrolment number there.
If any item fails, correct the source record through the proper authority first. Do not submit and hope it passes.
Why documents cause delays
NIOS confirms admission only after uploaded documents and the photo are verified. The official admission procedure also warns that forms without supporting documents are rejected and the fee is not refunded. A mismatch you catch before submission costs minutes; one caught after can cost your admission window. Already submitted? See how to check your NIOS admission status.
Do not skip these cautions
- Never alter a date or name just to make documents match.
- The date of birth entered at admission is treated as final under the prospectus rule.
